Climbing belt unit
A climbing belt with safety lanyard, is a body belt and a web safety lanyard, combined into one unit. This climbing belt should meet the military specifications of 2500 pounds tensile strength, and all hardware should also pass the military specifications in parachute grade.
This type of climbing belt is not designed to endure load. It is designed to position the web lanyard around the waist. The safety lanyard is adjustable from 4 inches to 7.5 inches and should be carried out by sliding the slider buckle along the fixed length of lanyard. To make it bear a load, make a continuous loop from the D-ring to the snap hook around the waist and the tree. The safety lanyard when in use should always be as short as practical to minimize the potential falling distance. Remember that the body climbing belt should always be arranged to be inside of the continuous circle formed by the lanyard and the snap hook attached to the D-ring.
The D-ring is that hardware shaped like the letter D. It is used at the end of the leather or fabric strap or secured to a surface with either a metal or fabric strap. It is applied for light loading only, not heavy loads. A lot of climbing belt products were recalled because the D-rings were secured to a fabric strap. There was danger of the fabric strap fraying when a load was applied to it, which made it to break off, causing several deaths.
Climbing belt warnings
Warning though, climbing high without the proper use of this belt may cause serious and fatal injury. Read the instructions carefully before using, or have someone teach you how to do it properly. Attractive as the belt may be to children, keep the climbing belt out of their reach as they can fatally injure themselves when using it behind your back.
A climbing belt for rock climbing, is a different type of climbing belt, so research every detail, before purchasing a climbing belt for trees.
